A Father’s Lesson

➡️ This story has to do with a lesson I learned from my father. I’m traveling with three teenagers in Germany, and we’re going from one town to another by rail. For those of you who have traveled on a train, you know that the train comes in quickly and when the doors open you want to get yourself and your luggage on as soon as possible to ensure you’re ready when the train departs.

➡️ So, that is exactly what happens. The train stops. The doors open. I am helping the teenagers get their luggage onto the train. We get on. We get settled. We find our seats. The train pulls out. And as I’m looking at the window, I see that my son, Ryan, is not on the train, but he’s on the platform. He and I looked right at each other as the train pulled away. So what does one do? Easy, I followed the lesson my father taught me. The girls and I go to the very next stop. Off we all get (with our luggage) and I say, “Stay put. I’ll be right back.”

➡️ I take the next train, go back one-stop, pick up Ryan, and we get back on the train, meet the girls. Now we’re back on schedule. So the lesson that my father taught me was this, “always go back to where you last made eye contact.” Ryan and I knew that rule, and so he stayed put (where we last made eye contact) until I came back for him. That’s the way that one ended.
