Cuba

Just ninety minutes from the United States lies Cuba, the largest island in the Caribbean with over 11 million inhabitants.  A multiethnic country whose people, culture and customs derive from diverse origins, the island has nine UNESCO world heritage sites.  Among them the San Pedro de la Roca Castle at Santiago de Cuba, one of the best preserved examples of Spanish-American military architecture.  In the colonial town of Trinidad, founded in 1514, locals ride horses on cobble stone streets past houses painted in pastel colors, and elegant mansions are now museums.  Much of the mystique and excitement of visiting Cuba is about the art and music.  Music in Cuba is influenced by African and European salsa, merengue, rumba, and jazz.  In addition to talented musicians, Cuba has a thriving community of artists.  A must-see is a visit to the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, as the collection ranges from traditional to modern.   Art is available everywhere in Havana, from markets to street corners.  Paladares, privately owned restaurants that are often run by families, sometimes out of their homes, have become popular in recent years. They are intended to give tourists a truly authentic Cuban experience.  Now is the time to visit Cuba, as surely tourism will change the fabric of the country in the near future.
