I\u2019m traveling with three teenagers in Germany, and we\u2019re going from one town to another by rail. For those of you who have traveled on a train, you know that the train comes in quickly and when the doors open you want to get yourself and your luggage on as soon as possible to ensure you\u2019re ready when the train departs.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u27a1\ufe0f So, that is exactly what happens. The train stops. The doors open. I am helping the teenagers get their luggage onto the train. We get on. We get settled. We find our seats. The train pulls out. And as I\u2019m looking at the window, I see that my son, Ryan, is not on the train, but he\u2019s on the platform. He and I looked right at each other as the train pulled away. So what does one do? Easy, I followed the lesson my father taught me. The girls and I go to the very next stop. Off we all get (with our luggage) and I say, \u201cStay put. I\u2019ll be right back.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u27a1\ufe0f I take the next train, go back one-stop, pick up Ryan, and we get back on the train, meet the girls. Now we\u2019re back on schedule. So the lesson that my father taught me was this, \u201calways go back to where you last made eye contact.\u201d Ryan and I knew that rule, and so he stayed put (where we last made eye contact) until I came back for him.
